Many factors surround the way a wine will taste, including the way it is served. The following are some pointers to enhance your wine experience.
Glassware
Clear, good glassware is necessary for the character of a wine to come out. A glass to use would be one that allows an aroma to be focused on, ample size for swirling, minimal thickness around the rim and no decoration (as it should be clear).
Temperature
The temperature of a wine will have a great impact on its character. Sparkling, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc wines should be served well-chilled. Full-bodied white wines benefit from being a few degrees warmer. Red wines should be served at approximately 16°C.
When to Open
Open sparkling and white wines prior to consumption. Red wines need to ‘breathe’ prior to consumption (hence it is advisable to decant red wines).
Decanting
For the best flavour and aroma, it is advisable to decant all medium-full bodied red wines an hour before consumption. As easy way to do this is to pour the wine into a clean jug and then back into the bottle. If necessary, rinse the bottle first.
