How to Taste Fine Wine

It is important to ensure that the expression of a wine’s character can emerge when tasting a fine wine. A glass that allows the aromas of a wine to emerge is important in this process. An International Standards Organisation (ISO) tasting glass can be used or a Riedel.

Appearance
Hold the glass against a white background to study the wine’s colour, vibrancy and clarity.

Aroma
Swirl your glass for the aroma and gently inhale with the glass near your nose, and try not to smell the wine too many times.

Taste
A small sip and swirling it in your mouth will enable you to note flavours and the acidity and tannin (in the case of red wines). Consider the elements (balance, complexity, and length of flavor). Retaste the wine if you need to. If you are tasting a few wines at once, spit the wines out to preserve the integrity of both your palate and mind. Tasting is a good way to obtain an idea of a wine’s quality, but drinking wine is the best way to enjoy a wine! The evolution of fine wines extends to its time in a glass, where its real depth and complexity is revealed.
